Visible Hand es una obra online en donde se ve la sencilla imagen de una mano, algo así como un icono, compuesta por caracteres tipográficos al modo del arte ASCII, usando las técnicas de visionado de los primeros ordenadores. En este caso, sin embargo, las figuras y letras que componen la imagen son dinámicas y cambiantes: se generan en tiempo real según las subidas y bajadas del mercado de valores a nivel mundial. La que era originalmente una imagen fija cambia de acuerdo al volumen de transacciones financieras, lo que alimenta y, al mismo tiempo, altera la imagen. Atrapada entre lo digital y lo financiero, y entre dos formas de representación, la imagen de la mano parece luchar continuamente por su propia visibilidad y su incierta realidad. ¿De quién es esa mano? ¿Significa algo esa mano? ¿Pide ayuda? ¿Es la mano de un manifestante? ¿O la de un comerciante? Simplemente llamando o mostrando el número 5 con sus dedos, recordándonos que contar con nuestros dedos (dígitos) es la base de lo digital. En cualquier caso, ésta no es la mano de Adam Smith, la “Mano Invisible” que supuestamente regula los mercados globales.

«Visible Hand» is an online work in which one sees a simple image of a hand, something like an icon, composed of typographic characters in the manner of ASCII art, using the viewing techniques of early computers. However, in this case the figures and letters that make up the image are dynamic and changing: they are generated in real time according to the ups and downs of the global stock market. What was originally a fixed image changes according to the volume of financial transactions, which feeds and, at the same time, alters the image. Caught between the digital and the financial, and between two forms of representation, the image of the hand seems to continually struggle for its own visibility and its uncertain reality. Whose hand is it? Does it mean something? Is it asking for help? Is it the hand of a protester? Or that of a trader? Simply calling out or showing the number 5 with his fingers, reminding us that counting with our fingers (digits) is the basis of the digital. In any case, this is not Adam Smith´s hand, the «Invisible Hand» that supposedly regulates global markets.
